Historic Civil War Replica Buildings – Gary Manville’s Herr Tavern

Dating back to 1815, this historic property initially served as a local tavern until 1828 when Frederick Herr acquired it. Herr continued to operate the establishment as a tavern and inn for travelers, while also playing a crucial role in the Underground Railroad, aiding slaves in their escape. The peaceful setting of rural Gettysburg was disrupted by the Civil War, with the Battle of Gettysburg unfolding in the fields surrounding Herr Tavern. Throughout the war, the tavern transformed into the first Confederate hospital, witnessing the turmoil of the era.
