Established in 1859, the Gettysburg Train Station was the final stop for the Western Maryland Railroad in the west, linking Gettysburg to Hanover and various major cities along the east coast. Throughout the intense Battle of Gettysburg from July 1-3, 1863, the train station transformed into a crucial field hospital, providing medical aid to injured soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies. Following the conclusion of the battle, the historic train station continued to play a significant role by housing and assisting thousands of wounded Union soldiers as they embarked on their arduous journeys back home via the railroad.
