Edward McPherson’s farm, located just half a mile west of Gettysburg on the ridge that carries his name, played a pivotal role during the fierce clashes of July 1, 1863. On that day, Confederate General Henry Heth’s Division made its advance toward Gettysburg, facing off against the Union cavalry led by General John Buford. As the battle escalated, reinforcements from General John Reynolds’ First Corps arrived, launching a counteroffensive that turned McPherson’s fields — where corn and wheat were cultivated — into a chaotic battleground, with fighting spilling into the adjacent woods owned by neighbor John Herbst. Amidst the turmoil, McPherson’s barn transformed into a sanctuary for the wounded, serving as a makeshift hospital that continued to provide care long after the echoes of battle had faded.
